Mermay designs!! They’re done!
so, I chose to base Yuna, Zeno, and Aneko’s designs off of actual fish! :D
Aneko’s choice was a lot more thought out than the others, but I like them all, and I think they look cool :3
I’m adding the ref photos for the designs too!
Yuna Handa- Nurse shark

Zeno Arakawa- Yellowhead jawfish

Aneko Ryōmen- Thresher shark

So, the reason I chose a thresher shark for Aneko, was because of how they use their tails to stun their pray. They use it in sort of a whiplash way and it reminded me of her blood demon art :D
Tagging @ta-ni-ya @shycroissanti and @larz-barz bc I want them to see this :D

Male Yellowhead Jawfish with eggs | Opistognathus aurifrons
Yellowhead Jawfish are mouthbrooders. The eggs are clumped together in a sticky ball and are incubated in the males mouth. They generally inhabit burrows made of crushed coral or sand.

Yellowheaded jawfish come out of their burrows and gracefully “dance” around waiting for food. When threatened, they quickly retreat to their burrows and will poke their head out slowly to see if the coast is clear 👀

𝐌𝐫. 𝐌𝐨𝐦
A male Yellowhead Jawfish mouth brooding its eggs. Most jawfish are mouth brooders with the male incubating fertilized eggs in his mouth until they hatch. A male jawfish attracts females to his burrow to lay her eggs so that he can brood them. Males attract females in a “dance” that includes the spreading of his pectoral fins and arching of his long back. If successfully wooed, she’ll lay her eggs deep within his burrow. The male will then quickly fertilize the eggs, which he then scoops up and holds in his mouth.

Native to coral reefs and the Caribbean Sea, yellowhead jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) use their large mouths to dig out sand and build burrows. These burrowing fish put a lot of hard work into maintaining their underground abodes, and rarely venture far from home. Males can be especially territorial, chasing away other fish who try to intrude. At night, the jawfish may cover their burrows with rocks to protect themselves from predators. Then its back to work the next morning on up-keeping their tiny tunnels! — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2PBzWhR

The male yellowhead jawfish will assume the role of motherhood, carrying the developing eggs in his maw! This is referred to as mouthbrooding, which select male AND female fish can achieve.
